Have You Heard About Project Gutenberg?
By Angela Johnson
Project Gutenberg is the first producer of free high quality ebooks and is run by thousands of volunteers. They even have periodicals (magazines). Project Gutenberg was launched by Professor Michael S. Hart in July 1971 and the project really expanded in 1990 with the introduction of the world wide web. There is no fee no matter how many books you download. Their ebooks are free in the United States because each book's copyright has expired, but they might not be free of copyright in other countries. Readers outside of the United States must check the copyright laws of their countries before downloading. Ebooks are in many languages: Languages with more than 50 books: Chinese Dutch English Esperanto Finnish French German Greek Italian Latin Portuguese Spanish Swedish Tagalog Languages with up to 50 books: Afrikaans Aleut Arapaho Breton Bulgarian Caló Catalan Cebuano Czech Danish Frisian Friulian Gaelic, Scottish Galician Gamilaraay Giangan Hebrew Hungarian Icelandic Iloko Interlingua Inuktitut Irish Japanese Kashubian Khasi Korean Lithuanian Maori Mayan Languages Middle English Nahuatl Napoletano-Calabrese Navajo North American Indian Norwegian Occitan Old English Polish Romanian Russian Sanskrit Serbian Slovenian Welsh Yiddish You can browse books by Category, Author, Title, Language. Top Downloads, or Recently Added. Books can be downloaded in many different formats. I love old cookbooks, so that's the category I'm starting with. Here is a list of some of the books in this category. Armour's Monthly Cook Book, October 1913 Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking Miss Parloa's New Cook Book Mrs. Beaton's Book of Household Management Mrs. Wilson's Cook Book My Pet Recipes, Tried and True Contributed by the Ladies and Friends of St. Andrew's Church, Quebec The New Dr. Price Cookbook A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes The Story of Crisco The Suffrage Cook Book Things Mother Used to Make Twenty-Five Cent Dinners for Families of Six The Virginia Housewife The Century Cook Book Here is a list of some of the periodicals they have: The American Missionary Chambers's Edinburgh Journal The Christian Foundation Continental Monthly Donahoe's Magazine Lippincott's Magazine McClure's Magazine The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction Mrs Whittelsey's Magazine for Mothers and Daughters Northern Nut Growers Association Golden Days for Boys and Girls Harper's Young People Prairie Farmer The Strand Magazine Even though all books are free to download, Project Gutenberg does accept donations. The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation is a non profit 501(c)(3) educational corporation so if you make a donation, it is tax deductible. You can help in other ways to digitize more books (http://www.pgdp.net) and record audio books (http://librivox.org). Another way to help is by becoming a Distributed Proofreader Volunteers can work on the same book by dividing the workload into individual pages (http://www.pgdp.net) . Missing Pages Help to complete projects. Take a look at the list of missing pages and maybe you can find some of them. Promote Project Gutenberg on your web site The more people who know about this project increases usage and perhaps some will become volunteers or donate money. Project Gutenberg - free ebooks online download for PC, iPad, Kindl... http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page News and Newsletters (http://www.gutenbergnews.org) This is a great project and I'm amazed someone started it up and is keeping it going with the help of volunteers. I hope to help out be proofreading a few pages.
